Business Opportunities in Digital Photography

Real Estate

43 million homes were sold last year in the US and just about everyone has at least one picture that is used to advertise the property online, in magazines, on brochures and in newspapers. Working with real estate agents or boards you can earn between $50 - $100 per house.

Portraits

Whether in the studio, outdoors or on location, people enjoy having a professional portrait of themselves. It is common to charge over $100 per hour for a portrait shoot, plus an additional $50 -$200 for prints and enlargements. Keep in mind that there is also a strong demand for children and pet portraits.

Internet Dating Photos

Over 23 million people in the US use Internet dating services. Many singles are now turning to professional photographers to capture their look so that they can post realistic high quality images online. Customers pay $150 and up for a natural looking personal portfolio in digital format that can enhance their online dating prospects.

Sports

Taking pictures at sporting events can be exhilarating and profitable. Shots of major events can be submitted to local news agencies, event organizations, participants and publications. Even minor league teams will pay $50 to $200 for team photos with extra sales potential for prints, reprints and premium items such as photo cards and T-shirts.

Wedding Photography

Most photographers will establish a wedding package comprised of 25 to 40 prints that retails for $1,500 - $3,000. It usually takes one day to shoot and an additional day to prepare the finished album. There are additional sales opportunities for candid shots, as well as additional prints, enlargements and posters.

Commercial

Billions of dollars are spent on product advertisements. Commercial photography is usually limited to the most experienced photographers who can charge as much as $2,500 per day for high end product shots.

Home Inventory

Maintaining a photographic record of valuable items can save you thousands of dollars if you have to file a claim with your insurance company. It is not unreasonable to charge $100 per hour to photograph precious items and return the finished work in print and CD format that the owner can store in a safety deposit box.

Glamour

Beauty salons, hair dressers and modeling agencies promote their products and services with pictures. It is not uncommon for them to pay over $150 per hour for promotional shoots with images that can be used for online advertising, as well as in brochures, for business cards and point of sale materials.

Stock

Stock photo agencies normally keep large inventories of assorted images that are resold to businesses for promotional purposes. In order to have your work listed, they require a minimum submission of 300 to 500 images. These can be still life, travel, leisure, landscape, people, animals, or any other type of images that appeal to their customers. Stock agencies commonly pay photographers commissions ranging between $5 to $100 for images that are purchased by their customers.

News & Events

Newspapers and magazines are always looking for interesting local and human interest stories and pictures. Depending upon their requirements, it is possible to have your pictures published and receive credit in the form of a tag line, as well as a cash payment.

Review the US Department of Labour Employment Outlook for Photographers.

"Photographers can expect keen competition for job openings because the work is attractive to many people. The number of individuals interested in positions as commercial and news photographers usually is much greater than the number of openings. Those who succeed in landing a salaried job or attracting enough work to earn a living by freelancing are likely to be the most creative, able to adapt to rapidly changing technologies, and adept at operating a business. Related work experience, job-related training, or some unique skill or talent-such as a background in computers or electronics-also are beneficial to prospective photographers."
